Scar and Keloid Reduction*

Photos: Before & After

Look at your skin. You may have one or two scars already. Most people do. Why? Because scars on our body can form from a simple cut we get from a fall or surgeries that we may undergo. Scars are part of life and they show what you’ve been through. For some people, scars are special. Someone might have a scar on chest because of a heart surgery, or you might have scars from chickenpox.

Of course,  the best way to prevent scars is to prevent wounds! But even with protective gear, a person can still get hurt once in a while. If this happens, you can take steps to prevent or reduce scarring. You can help your skin heal itself by treating it well during the healing process. Some scars fade over time. If yours doesn’t and it bothers you, there are treatments that can make a scar less noticeable, such as skin-smoothing medicated creams, waterproof makeup, or even minor surgery. No matter what caused your scar, at COL Clinic we help your scar less noticeable with non-invasive techniques.

Hypertrophic Scar and Keloid

Scar creation is a normal response of the healing process after injury. Any burn damage, surgery or other trauma can be a reason to form a scar that can be downright ugly. Many factors affect how the skin scars. Obviously, the depth and size of the wound or incision and the location of the injury are going to influence the scar’s appearances. But age, heredity, even sex or ethnicity, will all affect how skin responds. Overgrowth of scar tissue with irregular shape in wound repair due to the skin damage is named keloid. It is a soft top and firm tissue on the skin. It can be viewed as a familial factor (inheriting). It is more common in blacks. Age, gender and lifestyle factors are other important factors.

How Does Laser Therapy Work?

Lasers are a more effective method for reducing pain and the unpleasant appearance of both long-standing and new scars. It may need several  laser therapy sessions to considerably decrease the appearance of scarring; however, it is a pain free technique with an effective track record. Laser Therapy renovates damaged tissue to reappearance to a normal level in both structure and function which improves symptoms that include swelling, redness, blush damaged skin and pain. Laser therapy has helpful healing properties for burned victims due to decreasing burn scars and helping the healing process to the novel skin. Because cold laser isn’t a painful method compared to surgery lasers it can be applied very easily on children as well.

How Many Sessions of Treatment Are Needed?

Based on The Vancouver Scar Scale, the different numbers of laser therapy sessions are required, 3-15 sessions.

What Are the Aftercare Treatments?

After laser therapy there is no specific post care. You should avoid sun exposure and wear sunscreen regularly. Itching is very common. Using Aquaphor, Vitamin E ointment, or hydrocortisone cream on the treated area can be helpful.
